Oklahoma City pano
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma: The Oklahoma City National Monument reflecting pool, which is a memorial to the 168 people killed in 1995
when the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building was bombed by anarchist Timothy McVeigh and his confederate(s).
On the left are rows of chairs, one for each victim of the blast.
The monument is a very moving place. The wall on the right is labeled 9:01; the one on the left is labeled 9:03.
The time in between is represented by the reflecting pool and the chairs.

Mission San Luis Obispo
San Luis Obispo, California: Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa decorated for Easter services.
The lovely Mission has undergone a complete renovation in recent years to protect it against earthquake damage.
Structural and other repairs are now complete, and the Mission is a grand sanctuary.
Made with the Canon EOS 1ds Mark III digital camera.

Wildflower panorama
San Luis Obispo County, California: The La Panza area, east of Santa Margarita. Wildflowers abound in the region this year because we have had quite a bit
of rain. April showers bring May flowers (actually this will all be gone by May).
Made with the Canon EOS 1ds Mark III digital camera.

Jackson Square panoramic
New Orleans, Louisiana: Jackson Square, March, 2009
St. Louis Cathedral in the center, the Presbytere to the right of that, and the museum Cabildo on the left,
Jackson Square is in the heart of New Orleans. Andrew Jackson rides his bronze horse in the center of the square.

Mision SLO
San Luis Obispo, California: Mission San Luis Obispo, January, 2009
Just over a mile from my home, Mission San Luis Obispo is at the center of our city.
It was built by Spanish missionaries in 1772, and has recently undergone a major remodeling to help
it to resist “seismic events” that are known to occur around these parts.

Concours d'Elegance 2008
Avila Beach, California: Concours d’Elegance 2008
With a flood of Ferraris, pride of Porsches, a riot of Rolls Royces, and an embarrassment of Mercedes,
(a gaggle of Gull-wings?), (a mess of Maseratis?), (a pack of Packards?)
this event is held annually to benefit Hospice of San Luis Obispo.

 Iguazu Falls panoramic
Argentina: Iguzú Falls, June, 2008
On the Argentina-Brazil-Paraguay border, Iguazú is one of the natural wonders of the world.
It's bigger than Niagara, and over it flows one of the largest volumes of fresh water in the world.

One of those threatening-to-rain days made the scene of the Pacific Ocean in Elk perfect for a panorama.
Made with the Canon EOS 1DS Mark II professional digital camera.

Canada: Toronto skyline from Toronto Island, Thursday, April 21, 2005
The city of Toronto maintains the Toronto Islands as a city park. Ferry boats ply the waters between the mainland and the islands
to bring visitors over. The view of the city is spectacular, and the islands are a lovely place to spend the day.
The ice that freezes along the shore in winter months traps a variety of jetsam in the rocks: bottles, plastic, styrofoam float parts, etc.

Washington, D.C.: Lincoln Memorial interior, 1998.
(As much as I whine about the "Tripod Police," in the Lincoln Memorial I approached a Park Service Ranger,
and asked if I could use my tripod. She replied with a smile, "Why of course, as long as it has rubber feet.")

PANORAMIC PORTRAITS

Here are some examples of group portraits using panoramic photography.

WHAMO Pano 2007
California: 112 WHAMOBASS 2007 participants at the 43rd annual gathering of the group.
This is the assembly of pilots and crew for the annual ballooning event called WHAMOBASS –
Whiskey-Hill, Atherton, Menlo-Oaks Ballooning and Sporting Society.
This image was done with the Canon camera and PTGUI software, a combination that results
in much better resolution and image quality. Click here for a close-up showing the detail in the image.

The result is a photographic quality image that can be printed at sizes beyond 50 inches in width
without appreciable noise or image degradation.

Cast of “Fiddler on the Roof” at the Performing Arts Center, San Luis Obispo, California, February 19, 2000.

The San Luis Obispo Vocal Arts Ensemble performs its annual Pops Concert every winter.
In 2000 the performance featured works from Fiddler on the Roof, among others. The group portait below was made
with four frames of 35mm film photogaphed as a panoramic image.

PRODUCTION NOTES:
The early images were made with Apple QuickTime VR Authoring Studio software on a Macintosh G4 or G5 computer.
Some of the contributing images were taken with ISO 200 Kodak negative film and conventional Nikon 35mm cameras.
Scans were made to Kodak Photo CD discs by my friends at Color 2000 in San Francisco, California.

My panoramas from June, 2000 to December, 2004 were made with the Nikon D1 and D1X digital cameras
and the Nikkor 17-35 mm zoom lens.

I switched to the Canon 1DS Mark II camera in January, 2005, and shot with that camera until late 2009.
In November, 2009 I bought a Canon 1ds Mark III, the new high-resolution pro camera from Canon.
I enjoy the extraordinarily high resolution of that camera (21.1 Mp) and the quality of the images.
For panoramic images I use the Canon 17-40mm zoom lens, usually set at about 20mm.

I also switched to a new stitching tool in 2006 – PTGUI – which allows me to work with higher resolution files,
and with the new operating system on Macintosh computers (Apple never updated QTVRAS).

And, in 2008 I upgraded to a Mac Pro with four dual-core Intel processors. This makes a huge difference in processing speed
on these panoramic images. Some of my latest work results in images that are over 500MB in size, and the new computer
makes handling those images much more reasonable.

WHY NO INTERACTIVE IMAGES?

Interactive versions of these images in VR format will follow. It's a lot of work, and I am way behind.

But please keep an eye on this site in the future for the navigable versions of these images. They are great fun!

I HAVE PREPARED MUCH MORE ON PANORAMIC IMAGES:

Download my Essay on how to make QuickTime panoramic images.
This essay explains the process of set-up, preparation and stitching 360-degree panoramic images
with a regular camera, a tripod and Apple's QuickTime VR Authoring Studio software.
